Barcelona City Council has taken possession of the former Model prison and announced a detailed timeline to transform it into public facilities and green space, with works expected to be completed by 2035. The first phase of the transformation has been put out to tender, which will turn the site into a large public square in the Esquerra de l'Eixample with two blocks of facilities and green space.

Barcelona City Council fines owners who walk dogs unleashed on streets and non-designated areas, and has created a network of 114 operational shared-use zones (ZUC), of which 110 are freely accessible and unfenced. It has also extended the opening hours of at least 13 of these spaces. The measure aims to make coexistence between pedestrians and pets in public space compatible.
