Barcelona's Pompeia bookshop marks 104 years with four generations of the same family
The Pompeia bookshop, located at number 5 Carrer Cardenal Casañas in Barcelona, was founded in 1922 by Montserrat Martí Guadall's maternal grandparents, Joan Guadall and Ramona Bel, in a building of more than three hundred years old. The shop, which retains its original 1922 fittings, sells new and second-hand books as well as self-published authors' titles on consignment, alongside stationery and calligraphy materials. Montserrat Martí, who turns eighty this month, has been opening the shop every morning at nine o'clock for nearly sixty years. Her nephew, Ricard Martí Permanyer, represents the fourth family generation behind the counter, having originally joined to help out when his aunt injured her arm. The family's ancestors were able to purchase the premises, which removes the concern of a monthly rental cost. (042b9a5e13b85572)

Actress Mercè Pons (Arbúcies, Selva, 1966), with forty years on stage, stars in El fill, a play by Nobel Prize-winning Norwegian author Jon Fosse directed by Ferran Utzet, at the Espai Lliure of the Teatre Lliure in Barcelona until June 7. The work depicts an elderly couple awaiting the return of their only son after a long absence, set in a rural environment defined by silence and lack of communication. In an interview, Pons reflects on the shortage of female roles for women over fifty in the profession, and states she has chosen to do more theatre in response to that situation. She also recalls her voice training at the Institut del Teatre and the influence of actress Cristina Cervià, who died in March 2019, on her early career. (76910df3b511f7d2)
