ERC makes orbital rail line a condition for supporting Catalan government budget
ERC has made the construction of the orbital railway line one of its main conditions for supporting the Generalitat's budget this year. The project would link Vilanova i la Geltrú with Mataró via Vilafranca del Penedès, Martorell, Terrassa, Sabadell and Granollers, at a total estimated cost of 5,200 million euros, of which 4,800 million would go to infrastructure and 400 million to rolling stock. The line would have a total length of around 120 km, of which approximately 68 km would be newly built, and is estimated to attract around 20 million passengers annually. ERC argues that the bulk of the financing should be borne by the Spanish state, with possible additional contributions from the European Investment Bank. Preliminary studies for phase 0 are planned for between 2027 and 2028, with the first works scheduled for 2028, and completion of the full line is estimated around 2040. (8bb5047a7a683d02)

Argentine illustrator Antonio Seguí (1934-2022) had Menorcan roots
Antonio Seguí (1934-2022), born in Córdoba, Argentina, and regarded as Argentina's most internationally recognised illustrator, had paternal grandparents from Menorca, part of a wave of emigrants from Ciutadella who settled in Córdoba around the turn of the 20th century. From the 1960s onward, Seguí lived and worked in the French commune of Arcueil, though his work drew thematically on childhood memories of Córdoba. In 1999 he created the official poster for the Roland Garros tournament, and between 1999 and 2017 he installed five monumental painted-steel sculptures from his Família Urbana series in open spaces in Córdoba, following a model first installed in Bogotá and later reproduced in cities in Belgium, France, and Morocco. His work spans styles ranging from informalism to surrealism and techniques including graphic art, painting, engraving, and sculpture. (361e1c533d1d36d2)

Comuns demand halt to R-Aeroport project as condition for budget talks
Els Comuns have set the withdrawal of the R-Aeroport proposal — a shuttle train intended to link central Barcelona with the airport — as a condition for resuming budget negotiations with the government, stating that the project must be reformulated from scratch. According to information first reported by El Periódico and confirmed by ACN, the party says the proposal has drawn complaints from user associations who argue it will primarily benefit tourists. Jéssica Albiach said yesterday in an interview with ACN that the core issues in the budget negotiation were housing, mobility, and inequality, and she described the orbital train proposal as a positive development while noting it was a long-term project. Els Comuns have also warned that if negotiations with ERC shift the overall picture, their own conditions will need to be updated; ERC is set to analyse on May 18 at an extraordinary national council whether conditions exist to support Illa. Albiach also noted that further details were still lacking on the housing discipline unit needed to renew the budget pact. (4001994c6b498b22)
Catalonia among world's highest life-expectancy territories, posing retirement planning challenges
Catalonia ranks among the territories with the highest life expectancy in the world, at 84 years for men and nearly 87 for women. According to the Idescat, a person who turns 65 in Catalonia can expect to live between nineteen and twenty-three more years on average. Despite this, a gap persists between individual aspirations and financial preparation, as many people plan their future based on average life expectancy without accounting for the growing probability of living to ninety or beyond. According to the latest Enquesta de Salut de Catalunya (ESCA), 55% of the population aged 65 or over report good, very good, or excellent health, compared with 81% of the general population. An IMF study from last year argued that ageing should no longer be viewed exclusively as a problem, describing longer and healthier lives as one of the main achievements of the twentieth century and calling for investment in older human capital to take advantage of a more experienced population. Catalan offers a wide range of adjectives to express nuances of 'dirty'
Catalan has a large variety of adjectives for expressing the concept of 'dirty', each with its own nuance. Among the more colloquial terms are merdós ('very dirty') and galdós, used ironically. Some adjectives apply according to the substance causing the dirt: llardós or llardissós for greasy substances, engrudós for paste-like matter, and sutjós for soot. Other terms apply exclusively to people, including potiner, carnús, pollós, and runós, the last of which is characteristic of the País Valencià. The word brut has also generated numerous derivatives — brutícia, brutedat, brutesa, brutor, brutejar, embrutadís — and two compound words: carabrut and tapabruts. (532093bba21bae8f)

Sources at À Punt told VilaWeb that the reason for the change was a scheduling matter and not worker pressure. Opinion piece criticises Illa government over police infiltrations and labour dispute management
An opinion article published by VilaWeb on May 15 examines the situation of President Salvador Illa's government, focusing on the infiltration of Mossos d'Esquadra officers into teachers' assemblies and on conflicts with teachers and doctors. The text states that councillor Albert Dalmau reached an agreement without the knowledge of the main trade unions, and that councillor Olga Pané was forced to withdraw a measure on incentives for primary care centres to shorten the duration of sick leave. The article also refers to a budget agreement pending validation, linked to the metropolitan region's orbital rail project, and questions why Esquerra Republicana has continued to support the government despite the latter having set aside the collection of personal income tax, a commitment from the investiture agreement. The text notes that 44.8% of Esquerra's members voted against that agreement, and that the PSC, Esquerra, and the Comuns together held sixty-seven seats for much of the vote count in the elections that brought Illa to the presidency. The museum is calling for the start of a "bona fe" negotiation regarding the economic consequences arising from the annulment of the acquisition carried out under the purchase contract of 20 June 1994, invoking the right to reimbursement of the price paid and of more than thirty years of maintenance costs. Unlike the Generalitat, which is claiming 790,000 euros, the MNAC has not put a figure on the table, stating that the amount will be determined by calculating the price paid updated with the VAT variation and the cost of maintenance. Roger Bartra says Mexico's current political regime is eroding democracy
Roger Bartra i Murià (1942), an anthropologist, sociologist and writer born in Mexico City and son of Republican exiles Anna Murià and Agustí Bartra, gave courses at the Ferrater Mora contemporary thought chair at the University of Girona. In an interview on May 15, Bartra stated that Mexico's current political regime — both under Claudia Sheinbaum and her predecessor López Obrador — constitutes a right-wing populist government that is destroying Mexican democracy despite presenting itself as left-wing. He cited as evidence of this erosion a judicial reform that established the popular election of all judges, with turnout of around 10% of citizens, and Sheinbaum's failed attempt to eliminate proportional-representation seats in the legislature. Bartra, an honorary doctor at UNAM and member of the Real Academia de la Lengua Mexicana, is the author of around fifty books and has recently published El oficio de ser extranjero and Chamanes y robots. Around a hundred people protest in Santa Susanna against Chaos in the Sun festival
Around a hundred people marched through the streets of Santa Susanna (Maresme) yesterday to protest against the annual far-right gathering Chaos in the Sun, scheduled for May 29 and 30 on a private estate in the municipality. The protest was called by the Plataforma Antifeixista de l'Alt Maresme, and participants chanted slogans including "Maresme antifeixista", "No, no, nazis no" and "Campolier escòria feixista", directed at mayor Joan Campolier, whom they accuse of failing to prevent the event. The festival is taking place for the fourth consecutive year on a private estate belonging to the motorcycle group Pawnees MC Maresme. Municipal sources stated that the council "ni organitza l'esdeveniment, ni el promou, ni hi dóna suport" and expressed regret at having no legal tools to prevent it. Mayor Campolier said that in previous editions the life of the municipality had not been disrupted and that municipal ordinances had always been respected. (c151fd6abc5ac67f)
